Tips for Finding a Job in Australia

Are you looking to emigrate to the Land Down Under? A company such as The Emigration Group can help you with applying for your Australian Skilled Visa so that you are allowed to work when you get there – but what about the task of actually finding a job?

It’s never easy finding a job in a new country, but there are steps you can take that will help you to find employment in your new home in Australia. Here are some tips to keep in mind for finding a job in Australia:

Tips for Australia Job Hunting

  • Before you even decide to emigrate, do some research into your particular job field to find out whether it is in demand in Australia and whether there is a good chance you will find a job within your career.
  • Have your work qualifications and education assessed by the appropriate Australian authority, so that you will be able to hit the ground running in your search for a job.
  • When you are writing up your work experience on your CV, compare the company you worked with to the relevant Australian company. The person reading it might not be familiar with the brand from your home country, so they will better understand it if you state the Australian equivalent.
  • Ask a local Australian to look over your CV for you and give you their honest feedback. They might be able to spot something that you didn’t notice, but will make a big difference.
  • Before your flight to Australia you can start applying for jobs online so that you will have a chance to line up an interview before you arrive.
  • If an employer contacts you before you arrive, you can set up a Skype webcam interview with them.
  • Research the potential employers that you might want to work for in Australia. Find out as much as you can about their companies so that if you get an interview you will be informed and prepared.
  • Send a letter and a CV to every potential employer and recruitment agency in the city you are moving to in order to let them know that you are available for work.
  • Make sure that you research how to prepare your CV in the Australian style, so that it will look correct to the local employers who are looking it over.
  • If it is possible, provide an Australian mobile phone and postal address in your CV.
  • Keep in mind that applying for jobs in Australia won’t be the same as applying at home. Remember that things will be different and you will need to adjust to the local way of doing things.
  • Before you are able to start work in Australia you will need to obtain an Australian tax file number, which you can get by applying online at the Australian taxation office website.
  • Use your networking skills as much as possible. Expat groups can be a great way to find a job and learn from others about the Australian workplace.
  • Read the website, brochure and any other materials from the company you are applying for. Make sure that you incorporate some of the lingo and phrases used by the company subtly into your own cover letter. Also, you can use them in the interview if you are subtle and smooth enough to get away with this. If you market yourself in the same way they market themselves, they will assume you are a perfect fit.
  • Remember – if you have to pay anything upfront when you start a job it is probably a scam. Also, if it sounds too good to be true there is probably a scam somewhere.
  • Use Gumtree, which is the local classifieds, to find plenty of different job listings located all over Australia.
  • Last but not least – it’s sometimes not what you know but who you know. When you make new Australian friends ask them to introduce you to anyone they know who is hiring!

These are just a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to finding a job when you relocate to Australia. It can be challenging at first, but if you are persistent and resourceful you will eventually find a great opportunity for employment in your new home.
