Should You Pursue an Online College Degree?

Online college can offer a lot that in-course college can’t. For one thing, it can give you the freedom to manage your own schedule and you don’t need to worry about expensive university overhead. However, not everyone has the right personality or ambitions and online college may not be right for them. If this is the case, you really want to know where you fit on the spectrum. If you want to stay at home, or maybe you are deciding what steps to take next, you may want to take an online course. Indeed, taking online courses can allow you to figure out the next steps without lagging behind on credits. So, should you pursue an online college degree? – Here are some questions you should be able to ask yourself.

Do You Have a Full Time Job?

If you currently have a full time job and maybe a family, you may want to stick with online courses. This will allow you to focus on your future career without having to commute to a college campus everyday. Plus, if you have a family, taking online courses will allow you the opportunity to raise your kids without spending too much time at school.

Do You Enjoy Camaraderie?

If you are the kind of person that enjoys the camaraderie and closeness of other students, you may want to think about taking an in-course program. If you are the kind of person that needs to work with other students, you may want to visit a campus everyday. The truth of the matter is that an online course may make you feel stuck and you may start to feel lonely. If you are on the fence, you may want to spend a semester trying both.

Do You Want to Work in a Hands-on Field?

If the field you want to enter is a hands-on field, you probably want to go to a campus everyday – where there is a lab or some other facility. For instance, if you want to enter the sciences, you may thrive in a lab, which is something you can’t get online. However, if you want to get USC’s MPA degree, you may be able to sign up for online courses.

Do You Want to Go to Grad School?

The truth of the matter is that a good grad school may require that you attended a four-year university. However, there are many four-year degree programs that you can take online. This is a question you want to ask yourself, because some online programs are short, quick and mainly for the trades. Some of them aren’t even accredited. Before you take an online degree program, you want to make sure that the school is accredited.

Do You Want to Stay in Your Home State?

On top of everything, you may want to stay in your home state. In fact, you may even want to stay living with your parents while you build up your credits and a savings account. In the end, you can always transfer when you are truly ready to fly the coupe.
