All you need to know about knee dislocation

The condition of knee dislocation is an injury that happens when your tibia and fibula move out from the normal position. It is often called patella dislocation that happens when the patella or kneecap goes out from the normal position. The bones are placed with the help of ligaments, strong bands of connective tissues, which stabilize the knee. When your knees get dislocated there is a tear in the ligaments. Dislocation is possible as an outcome of contact or non-contact trauma that happens due to hyperextension and direct force being a common mechanism of injury.

Many times people see symptoms of knee dislocation when they play sports, soccer, gymnastics, ice hockey or rugby. These results from hyperextensions, however, dislocations can be caused due to the direct force of collisions or vehicle accidents, and more.

Types of Knee Dislocation

Knee dislocations are related to tibial displacement, and there can be five types of them – anterior, posterior, rotary, lateral and medial. The rotary type can be segregated through anteromedial, anterolateral, posterolateral, and posteromedial. The treatment of dislocation is known to difficult but not outright tough.

There are more chances of facing Patella dislocations compared to other knee dislocations in lateral directions. It occurs when knee is extended and there are external rotations or there is an outwardly-directed force on your leg.

Chances of having a high velocity dislocation can be sudden, extreme, and due to the violent forces that impact on the knees. The dislocation is likely to come from the widespread of damage to ligaments and bones. The low velocity dislocation is related to sports or athletics. The results are lower in terms of vascular damage or damage in tissues. This is the low velocity conditions are have an optimistic prognosis compared to the high velocity conditions.
